Is a permit required if I'm working on my own home?

Permit requirements do not change if a homeowner is doing the work instead of a contractor. A permit is required on new construction, alterations, or additions and all electrical and plumbing work, per Section 14-5 of the City Code. Accessory structures, portable buildings, and fences also require permits.

A permit is not required for painting, replacing floor covering, or replacing cabinets. Permits may be waived by the Building Official for minor, non-structural repairs valued under $1,000.00.

Please call Permits & Inspections at (334) 615-4450 for clarification on whether or not a permit is required.
