[ARCHIVED] Howell D. Coe Awards Presented in Mite & Midget Football Leagues

On November 3, 2014, at the championship game, Dothan Leisure Services presented two players with the Howell D. Coe Award.

The Howell D. Coe Award is given in honor of the late Dr. Howell Coe, a lifelong friend of youth athletics in the City of Dothan. This award is presented each year to a participant in the Department of Leisure Services Mite & Midget Football Program. The recipients are chosen for their outstanding qualities in academics, sportsmanship, and leadership on and off the field.

The Mite League recipient is Ford Register. Ford is a fourth grade honor roll student at Providence Christian School and is a member of First United Methodist Church in Dothan. This is his second season playing football for the Doug Tew Bears. He plays running back on offense and defensive end on defense. He leads the team in rushing yards on offense and tackles on defense. Ford is a fervent football player as well as a natural leader and team motivator. Off the football field, Ford also enjoys hunting and playing baseball. This will be his fifth year playing baseball at Doug Tew. He started at 5yrs old in tee ball and this will be his last year in the Minor League. Ford’s parents are Rad & Amanda Register. His sister is Allie Kate.


The Midget League recipient is Colby Pilcher. Colby is a second year player of the Wiregrass Jets football team. He plays tight end on offense and leads the team in receptions. Colby plays linebacker, quarterback, and leads the team in tackles on defense. He is the true definition of a leader on the practice field and during games. He leads by example, often imploring his teammates to give more and strive for greater personal goals. Colby is looked up to and followed by his teammates. Off the field, Colby’s record is just as stellar, as he carries a yearly academic average of 92.85. While being a member of the gifted student program, he has been honored with the good citizen award 2011 - 2014, and received the Accelerated Reader award in 2013. Colby has been playing sports with Dothan Leisure Services since he was 4. He has played soccer, baseball and football, including making the All-Star teams. Besides sports, Colby’s hobbies include hunting and riding motocross. His parents are Martin & Candice Pilcher. His sister is Cassie.
