Barge Waggoner Sumner & Cannon, Inc. (BWSC) and Woolpert, Inc. have been contracted by the City of Dothan to smoke test the public sewer lines in certain areas of the City, as part of an ongoing program to detect leaks within the sanitary sewer collection system. A company representative will place a notification on your front door to advise when they will be in your area.
Smoke should not enter your home unless you have defective plumbing or dried-up drains. To reduce the chance of smoke entering your home, run water at all your fixtures that are not regularly used, including floor drains, briefly to ensure that all traps are full. Water in the drain traps will not evaporate before we have completed the work.
The smoke used for this testing is manufactured specifically for this application and is harmless, non-toxic, non-staining and creates no fire hazard. It will not harm children, pets or plants. Persons with severe asthma should avoid breathing any smoke to avoid irritation.
During testing, you may see smoke coming from the roof vents of your home. This is a normal occurrence. If smoke does enter your home and our crews are still in the area, we can perform a brief inspection to help you locate the source of the smoke inside your home. However, the City is not responsible for repairs to your internal plumbing. The purpose of this testing is to locate defects on the public sewer. Any smoke in the home should dissipate quickly.
It is not necessary for you to be home during these tests. Most observations are made from the street; however, it may be necessary to enter back yards.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding these tests, please contact Debra Holley at BWSC, (334) 793-6266.
