Commissioner Larry Matthews began serving citizens in Dothan’s District
1 in October 2005. He is a Sales Service Associate with the United
States Postal Service and previously worked as Acting Postmaster in New
Brockton, Columbia, and Clopton, Alabama, as well as in various other
capacities at the Dothan Post Office. Commissioner Matthews served in
the Alabama Air National Guard and the United States Air Force.
A
graduate of Dothan High School, Commissioner Matthews attended Wallace
Community College and Troy University, Dothan Campus Continuing
Education. His professional career includes experience in
Administrative Postmaster Management, Postal Supervision and Management,
as well as Career Awareness Council.
Among the distinguished awards presented to Commission Matthews are the
U.S. Postal Service Special Achievement Award; Boys and Girls Clubs
National Service to Youth Award; Hawk-Houston Boys Club Man/Youth Award;
Wiregrass Lions Club President’s Award; Boy Scouts of America Excellence
in Leadership Award; NAACP Community Service Award; Alpha Kappa Alpha
Community Service Award; and numerous other certificates and awards for
participation.
Currently, Commissioner Matthews serves as President, Board of Directors
of the Hawk-Houston Boys and Girls Clubs; Board Member of Landmark Park
and Catholic Social Service Board of Directors; member of the Multi
Racial Relations Group; P.E.E.R.S. Group; Southeast Alabama Arts
Alliance; Carver Magnet School PTO; Northview High School PTO; and
NAACP. He is a former member of the Walton Park Advisory Board;
Houston County Democratic Conference Chairman; Wiregrass Lions Club
President; Alabama Democratic Conference 2nd Congressional
District Coordinator and 33 Degree Mason.
Commissioner
Matthews is married to wife, Eva and has two sons, Eric and Thomas and
one daughter, Michelle. He
is an active member of First Missionary Baptist Church where he serves
as deacon, youth advisor, and a member of the male chorus.
