Mayor Mike Schmitz's Bio
Mayor Mike SchmitzMike Schmitz was elected Mayor of Dothan, Alabama, on July 14th, 2009, with an historic margin of 86 per cent of the voters in virtually every demographic. A native of Wisconsin and new to elected politics at the time, Mayor Schmitz has been widely known and admired in the Wiregrass region as a successful businessman and active community leader for over 25 years.

In the automotive industry since 1978, Mayor Schmitz owns the Hyundai, Mazda, and Mercedes-Benz franchises as Mike Schmitz Automotive Group in Dothan. Mike Schmitz was Alabama’s recipient of what is considered the auto industry’s most prestigious retail honor, the TIME Quality Dealer Award, which honored the top 50 dealerships among 22,000 in the country. In 2013, Mercedes-Benz USA awarded Mercedes-Benz of Dothan the Best of the Best Dealer Recognition Award.

Economic Development
Mayor Schmitz has worked tirelessly for the region’s economic development and is proud that the fiscal strength of the city continues even during this challenging economic climate. As a result of sound financial management, Standard and Poor’s gave Dothan one of its highest ratings for bonds (AA) for a city of its size, indicating that the City of Dothan is financially solid. To further promote economic development, Mayor Schmitz initiated the Economic Summit on Jobs in September 2010. This annual event was designed to give the community’s combined knowledge and experience a voice to identify opportunities for job creation.

A major economic development success culminated on April 5, 2013, when Mayor Schmitz proudly and enthusiastically announced that Commercial Jet, a Miami-based aviation maintenance company, would expand its business to a facility at the Dothan Regional Airport, creating 500 new jobs over the next five years. Another 1,500 local jobs are expected to be an indirect result of Commercial Jet’s presence in the community.

After two-and-a-half years of dedicated efforts between Mayor Schmitz and Ray Cheng, CEO of Sozo Group, a Hong Kong-based corporate and economic development consulting company, Dothan hosted the country’s first ever U.S.-China Manufacturing Symposium on March 26-28, 2014. Attended by leading Chinese and American business and government leaders, this historic event concluded with the announcement that a prominent Chinese 3D printer company would locate its first North American office in Dothan, where it is now known as Dothan 3D. Mayor Schmitz, Cheng, and others continue to work diligently with several other international companies as they consider expanding to the Wiregrass.

On April 4, 2014, Glasstream Boats, a Panama City, Florida-based boat manufacturer announced its expansion to Dothan, bringing 100 new jobs initially, with the possibility of 75 more in the future.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of innovative leaders including Mayor Schmitz, Dothan set a standard across Alabama and the U.S. with the opening of the state’s first osteopathic college, which is the first in the nation to share a campus with a regional medical center. City, County, and State government leaders, business leaders, and the Southeast Alabama Medical Center, led by CEO Ron Owen, all worked diligently to build the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM) in Dothan, which began construction in January 2012. Since the first class of 150 students began studies in August 2013, ACOM is further solidifying the region’s fiscal and physical health, both of which are among Mayor Schmitz’ top priorities.

Serving Dothan
Adopted at age five, Mayor Schmitz also has a passion for child advocacy, as evidenced by many of his personal endeavors such as leading a city-wide campaign against illiteracy, assisting in building parks in a disadvantaged section of town, and providing funding for the Hawk-Houston Boys and Girls Club.

A 20-year competitor in the Ironman Triathlon, Mike Schmitz combined his love for fitness and public service in 2006, when he bicycled cross-country over 3,000 miles from the Pacific to Atlantic to raise $100,000 for the Wiregrass Children’s Home! He was joined by three other former Chamber of Commerce Chairmen in this incredible endeavor.

Furthermore, in 2010, to promote health, fitness, and family fun, he started the annual Mayor’s Ride for Fitness for bicyclists of all ages, as well as the Cross-Country Championship for 300 city elementary school runners between the ages of 6 to 10.

Along with many others, Mayor Schmitz played an active role in securing the funds needed to construct two new state-of-the-art libraries in Dothan, which opened in February of 2014. This project was a collaborative effort among City, County, local businesses, private citizens, and the Wiregrass Foundation.

Service Awards
Mike Schmitz has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards over many years for his outstanding service to the community. He also served as Chairman of the Wiregrass United Way.

Personal Information

Mayor Schmitz and wife, Sandy, are the proud parents of 24-year-old Michael. On December 31, 2012, the Mayor and his son completed an arduous 8-day climb of 19,342 feet in rain, snow, and sub-freezing temperatures to reach the summit in Tanzania, Africa, of Mount Kilimanjaro—the tallest free-standing mountain in the world—followed by a 2-day descent. “I think you need to challenge yourself from time to time,” the Mayor later said. “I have always believed in trying to see what I could do.” He added, “It was absolutely worth it. It was one of the greatest father-son adventures I could ever imagine.”

In business, in community involvement, and as Mayor of Dothan, Mike Schmitz is an ardent advocate of shared involvement, believing that “By working together, we can do better.” Building more partnerships with international and domestic businesses to bring potentially high-paying jobs to Dothan -- and the entire Wiregrass region—will continue, even beyond his unopposed second term in office, to be his passion and purpose.
