Wastewater Collection & Treatment
Wastewater Collection
The Dothan Utilities Wastewater Collection division is responsible for operating and maintaining the city's sanitary sewer collection system, which includes:
  • 50 primary pumping stations
  • 9,400 plus manholes
  • 500 plus miles of underground collection and transmission piping
  • Various other structures and devices

This network of piping collects and transports sewer from 27,000 combined residential, commercial, and industrial customer buildings to each of the city’s three wastewater treatment plants. Daily operations for this division include the removal of blockages in sewer lines, repair and replacement of sewer lines when needed, and smoke testing and video taping of the system to identify problem lines and eliminate unauthorized discharges. At Dothan Utilities, customer service is a top priority and as such daily activities include responding to customer service calls.

Wastewater Treatment
The Dothan Utilities Wastewater Treatment division is responsible for operating and maintaining three wastewater treatment plants with a total capacity exceeding 22 million gallons of wastewater per day. These plants receive all collected wastewater and treat to effluent levels that are in compliance with all regulatory requirements for discharge to surface waters. This division strives to accomplish all functions safely, cost effectively, and in a manner that serves customers well while protecting the environment.

Administrative Order
The City of Dothan entered into an Administrative Order on Consent (AOC) with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management by resolution on July 17, 2012.
