| The Dothan Police Department in cooperation
with the Houston County Sheriff's Department, the Emergency Management Agency and local
broadcasters has developed the State's second regional A.M.B.E.R. Alert Plan. This plan,
sponsored by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is designed to aid in
the recovery of abducted children in our area. Established in 1996 following the abduction and subsequent murder of 9 year old Amber Hagerman, this program has been slowly implemented throughout the United States in regional locations. The name of the program is an acronym for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response. The program is designed to galvanize a community response to a child abduction. This is done through the area-wide broadcast of information of the abducted child, the suspect and/or the suspect's vehicle. The Plan has four objectives: 1) To provide rapid response to the most serious child abduction cases. 2) Gain assistance from thousands of TV viewers, radio listeners, and internet surfers. 3) To coerce the abductor to release the child for fear of being caught. 4) To deter predators from abducting children where the Plan exist. This is a wonderful example of the "community effort" displayed in our City! The competitive market philosophy has been set aside and we are all focusing on one common goal---the protection of the children in our community. We are proud to be leading the way with a plan that is certain to be nationwide in the not so distant future. If a child is abducted, the local media will be alerted and sound the Amber Alert Tone. When you see or hear the Amber Alert tone or information on television or radio, please pay close attention to the information provided. Usually a description of the child abducted will be given along with the description of a vehicle and the offender. Please pay attention to your surroundings and if you see a child, vehicle or person matching the description, dial 9-1-1 operator you are calling about the Amber Alert, where you are and what you see. Your vigilance could save the life of a child. |
