Applicants are required to have a high school
diploma or G.E.D., submit to an extensive background and health screening including a drug
screen, possess a valid drivers license, meet the Alabama P.O.S.T. training requirements
and attend a P.O.S.T. certified academy. A career with the

The Training Unit is
responsible for all initial and ongoing instructional courses and skill maintenance for
the Dothan Police Department. This includes firearms, defensive tactics, communication
skills, emergency vehicle operations, and physical fitness.

The Dothan Police K-9 Division
utilizes nine K-9 units. These units are entirely self-supportive and are equipped with
specialized vehicles and equipment. K-9 units are fully trained to assist in search and
rescue, crowd control, fugitive recovery, narcotic apprehension, as well as explosive
disposal.
Citizen Observer Program
The Dothan Police Department operates a seven-week police academy in which the role of law
enforcement in the community is addressed. Following completion of the program, Citizen
Observers are allowed to ride along with police officers to observe police activities
