The Dothan Police Explorer Program is a
non-profit organization affiliated with Boy Scouts of America through the Dothan Police
Department. Chief John Powell is involved as a committee member along with several
advisors.
Requirements:
At least 14 years of
age and/or have completed at least half of the 8th
grade and no older than 21
Have parental or
guardian approval
Good health
Good moral habits with
no arrest convictions, serious offenses, or
negative police contact
Young adults, ages 14 - 21, are encouraged to
participate to determine interest in a career in law enforcement. Leadership skills and
community involvement are stressed along with many other skills necessary to succeed in
other career fields. The Explorer Post offers many opportunities such as a ride-along
program with police officers and the chance to work in various Dothan Police Department
Divisions including the Docket Room and Communication Center.
Explorers assist with special events and
clinics, crime prevention programs, location of missing persons, and they assist
dispatchers in our Communication Center. The activities in which they participate sharpen
their skills and prepare them for state and national competitions against other Explorer
organizations.
Explorers meet at the Dothan Police Department
every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Uniforms are required unless
otherwise notified. The cost is $10 per year for charter fees through the Boy Scouts and $3
per month for the Explorer account. Explorers hold fundraisers to raise money for
activities and equipment and accept donations.
