Applications are being accepted to establish an employment register for the position of Police Officer with the City of Dothan, Alabama. This is general police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances.

Salary Range 45 $1,185.60* Bi-Weekly

*Starting salaries will be adjusted based on education
above the minimum in a related field.
Associates – 2.5% ;  Bachelors – 5.0% ; Masters – 7.5%

The recruitment process for Police Officer is on a continuous basis.  The examination process will be repeated periodically depending on the number of new applicants.  As these processes are completed, new candidates will be merged with the current eligible list.  Although your score will remain the same through this process, your placement on the eligible list may change.  You can retest once every six (6) months and will stand on the last score received.  Your total score will remain valid for a twelve (12) month period after which time, if you do not reapply, your name will expire from the Police Officer register.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED equivalent.  Proof of high school diploma or GED certificate must be provided at time of application.
  • Certification as a Police Officer is preferred. Must submit a copy at time of application.
  • A completed employment application to include but not limited to, detailed description of duties, month and year, and complete addresses on each job listed.
  • A completed form Police Officer Form #281 detailed residence history.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT/PROMOTION/TRANSFER

  • The City of Dothan's Police Department will administer a polygraph examination to anyone hired/promoted/transferred into the Police Department. The examination will be a question and answer test that covers areas of your background, including but not limited to your employment application, employment history, involvement in criminal activity, such as thefts and domestic violence, drug usage and participation in the distribution of illegal and legal prescription medications.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid operator driver's license and an acceptable driving record.  Please present at time of application.
  • Applicant must be at least 21 years of age at time-of-hire.
  • The applicant must meet the minimum standards for law enforcement officers as established by Alabama Law. 
  • In an emergency and/or standby situation an employee in this position must be able to report to his/her regular work station in a maximum of 30 minutes from the time of notification. 
  • An employee in this position is subject to random drug testing.
  • An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations to include a criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.  See City of Dothan’s Background Check/Investigation Policy.
  • Must meet the City of Dothan's employment physical standards which includes drug/alcohol testing.

TESTING PROCEDURE:

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be notified by mail regarding the examination.  The time, date and place of the examination will be assigned at a later date.  Applicant’s on vacation, military leave, etc., are responsible for attending the examination on the date scheduled.
