Special Olympic Sports Training
The Therapeutics Program was created in 1977 as a means of
providing recreation programs for all Dothan citizens, regardless of handicapped
conditions. The program provides a variety of recreation and leisure activities which take
into consideration each participants needs and interests. Programs provide
opportunity for exercise, learning, and socialization.
A variety of programs are provided year-round for
physically and mentally handicapped persons. Special Olympics program activities include
bowling, swimming, gymnastics, volleyball, basketball, softball, unified bowling, and
track and field. Other activities include day camps, aerobics, Fun Night, and special
events. Field trips are offered year-round such as an annual trip to Camp ASCCA in the
fall for a weekend of fun and games in the outdoors.
The Therapeutics Program works with the Hang in There
Support Group and the Southeast Alabama Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities. These
groups are comprised of members with physical disabilities.
Dothans Therapeutics Program is extremely proud of
the fourteen-member choir, Friends which performs at various civic
organizations and Special Olympics functions.
Volunteers are a very important element of the Therapeutics
Program. Coaches, instructors, and aides are needed for the various programs offered.
Interested persons, clubs, or organizations should call Angie Lowe, Therapeutics
Supervisor, at 615-4743 for further information.
